Hazlewood felt like Finn in 2010/11 to me. Took his wickets but as the series went on got worse and worse. His bowling at Trent Bridge in helpful conditions was atrocious.

Yeah it doesn't really cut it to just compare the respective figures of the Aussie fast bowlers. Hazlewood was picked specifically to get the job done on the types of pitches that Australia lost 3 games on. And OK the majority of the blame for the losses should go to the batsmen, but he still bowled quite badly in those games. Clarke would have looked at the cloud cover in Cardiff or the grass on the pitch at Edgbaston and thought "this is a situation for Hazlewood". It was his turn to perform and he didn't do it.

He shouldn't be ranked lower than Johnson though. I love Johnson, but he really didn't bowl very well, bar the occasional reminder of what he's like when he does. I think on balance Starc, Lyon, Marsh and Siddle all did at least what was expected of them, but Johnson and Hazlewood didn't.

How come sometimes scoring runs when you're losing is considered meaningless but on some occasions it's given extra credit for being the only person to stand up?

Depends when they're scored. The 2nd innings runs scored at Trent Bridge for example are completely meaningless because the game was well lost by then.

Someone like Dravid in 2011 for example, scored the majority of his runs in the 1st innings when the games were very much alive (and by rights should have batted India into a winning position at Trent Bridge.)

Broad being well overrated at a 9+ by some on here. His spell at Trent Bridge was outstanding, but if you weren't to count that, he bowled at roughly the same average as Starc.

Obviously in rating his series performance it's not 'fair' to exclude his best figures, but it's useful as a guide to series performance to note that he was hardly bang on every time.

^ If you didn't watch the series maybe, but he bowled superbly in the first 4 tests and only got any luck in TB.
