Players post 1950s auction

I am thinking of doing an auction type draft - in which I would just be doing the admin sort of stuff to make things fair where I would put say 5 to 6 players over a 24hr timespan. I would try to include one opener, one middle order batsman, one allrounder, one keeper, one pacer and one spinner in each 24hr round. For later rounds this might become 5 rather then 6 if player pool has less spinners etc.

All competitiors would have a purse of $100m and would email me with any bids they want to make for any of the players in that round (you could bid for all 6 players in that round or none or anything in between.) The amount of any successful bid will be removed from purse in exchange for that player. You will have final squads of 11 but if you have 11 players and money left you could bid for a 12th, 13th etc. and have that 12th or 13th player replace another player/s in your squad if you thought that would improve your team. The player taken out of squad would not go back up for sale.

If there is sufficient interest rules would be

* Players who debuted after 1950 would be eligible

With nature of this draft I am probably looking at only 8 competitors to take part so player pool isn't too massive as 8x11 = 88 spots and am probably looking at quite a few more players given the draft nature of this would mean players go unpicked through strategy/holding back spending potentially.

Squads will be voted on as usual at end of draft.

I will add an email I will set up specifically for this draft in next post along with list of players in draft. If you could post here and email me if you want to take part along with any players you want added to draft (once I post initial list) who fit post 1950 debut criteria. You can ask for an unlimited amount of players to be added pre-draft within reason, once the draft has started each player can request a maximum of 3 new additions to the player pool (lets say you've suddenly realised you lack a #3 batsman and the ones that you would have bought have already gone up for auction you could add a new #3 to the draft). You can do that via email as well so not to give away any tactics/people you will bid for.

Each round would end once I have all bids/non-bids from every player and each new round would start once players from that round are added to squads/money amounts update - I would post that in here when this is the case

I hope this post has covered most things if not feel free to ask for clarifications. I will be away for much of tomorrow so might be slow with replies but aim to have a preliminary list of players up in the next hour.

EDIT - To ensure equity any additions to draft once its started have to be submitted within opening 7 rounds to ensure no one adds players to the draft once most individuals have already finalised squads.

In.

I think it's best to not have time limits -- let rounds be length-fluctuating; we all have busier days than others.

Player limits are the same -- I don't really think there's a need for this and it complicates things.

Just to clarify: debuts are test debuts, right? only test players are allowed? players are judged like in a test arena?

Point taken re Player limits on nationality I will edit that from initial post in a bit

Time limits point taken although in that case you will have to email or post on here for each round regardless of whether you are bidding for a player or not so next round can start as following rounds largely dependent on outcome of previous one, if you've got 2 openers you wouldn't bid for a 3rd one etc.

And debuts are Test debuts and yep judged on the basis of Test cricket

Is that what you meant by player limits or did you mean adding them to draft - if latter the reason is largely not wanting to bloat player pool excessively although it will of course be significiantly larger then the 88 players who are in final squads, also issues of fairness if Player A has chosen from player pool and after they have half a squad, Player B adds dozens of players to the player pool.

I meant the player pool; I would prefer just having everyone with a post-1950 test debut be eligible.

No one is directly ineligible but as I would be posting 5 or 6 players on here each round I'm concious of not having this run until we've gone through every single player to have debuted in Test cricket post 1950 (over 2,000 players). But I'm aware I might miss a few players people would consider as having a chance of making their XI - hence allowing unlimited additions to player pool (within reason) before the auction starts. And 3 per person (24 possible changes overall) once the auction starts. Perhaps me saying draft as well as auction in my post has perhaps muddied things too but I guess in effect this is more of an auction - think IPL auction but with players post 1950 debut and adapting to fact we won't get 8 players who can be around at the same time for several hours uninerrupted so this is an attempt to find the next best alternative.

Once everyone has drafted 11 players I will ask for you to email me any players within the draft not yet put up for bidding that you want put up for bidding - lets say you bought a spinner as backup early in the draft but had a better one in mind if you had money remaining and you do. Also if you have any of 3 picks for players to be added to draft once its started remaining you can utilise them then as well.

A couple are listed the rest I'll add to my list tonight. Some I questioned whether they would be wanted, although I had a feeling keepers was a slight weak spot in my initial selections, thanks.

Will be away from laptop for most of day but will try to give a clearer explanation tonight hb.

Been a busy day but I'll add those names mentioned to final list and correct Bruce Reid nationality.

To try and explain - I'll use my list of players above as an example (that will not be too dissimilar to order of players)

I will in each round put an opener, middle order bat, keeper, allrounder, pacer and spinner up for auction. If the order doesn't change that would be the first in each of those 6 subsections - Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Sobers, Sangakkara, Marshall and Warne. Players will submit their bids (you have a $100mil purse) for any players they want to bid for. Below is an example of player A and player B and potential bids and the outcome.

Player A bids - Gavaskar - $5mil, Tendulkar - $10mil, Sobers - $5mil, Sangakkara - no bid, Marshall - $5mil and Warne - $10mil
Player B bids - Gavaskar - $10mil, Tendulkar - $5mil, Sobers - $10mil, Sangakkara - no bid, Marshall - no bid and Warne - $5mil

Result of round 1

Player A gets Tendulkar, Marshall and Warne in their team at the expense of the total of their successful bids ($25mil) leaving them with a $75mil
Player B gets Sobers for $10mil and Gavaskar for $10mil and end the round with a purse of $80mil remaining
Sangakkara goes unsold and will not be redrafted - so won't be in Player A or Player B's squad.

Each round would work like this until each squad had 11 players at that point I'll ask if there are any players lower in list of players yet to be drafted that you want me to draft - you can do that on here or via email above if you don't want to give away your hand. Final squads will be 11 players but you can draft more then 11 players if within budget and you want to do so and then select a final XI from your larger squad to then be voted on. With suggestions a time limit might be problematic - people have busier days (like I did today!) you will need to email me whether you are making a bid or not for any of the players in the round. If you are not you can also post in here that you are not bidding on players in that round.

I hope that clears things up. I also need to think of a tie-breaker if Player A and B bid the same highest amount for a player say $10mil. In this case I am thinking the player who has gone longest since drafting a player and if that is level I will use a randomiser to decide - are others happy with this suggestion?

I have added the players to the below list and changed the orders slightly, 1st round will be the first player in the list for each category (opener, middle order, keeper etc.). The 2nd round will be the 2nd player in each list and so on. I have tried to ensure the star players are still inside the top 20 picks of each category but also ensure there is some variety - do you bid aggressively for a 1st round pick when in some cases there might be a later pick that you would want more.

I hope clarification a couple of posts up makes the process of this draft clear - if not feel free to ask any specific aspects you do not get

To sum up in this post
- $100mil to spend bidding for players - bids sent in each round via email - highest bid for each player is the winning bid.
- Final squads of 11 - you can pick more then 11 players but your final squad to be voted on will have to be cut down to 11.
- Players who don't receive a bid will not be redrafted

I'm not in and don't want to sound pedantic as you've done some incredible work in compiling those names, but for tests Nathan Astle batted in the middle order (usually 5) and didn't open.

Thanks for picking up on that, think it was due to him being listed as an opener on Cricinfo but as you say that'll be on the basis of his ODI matches, will correct that along with any other suggestions for missing players tonight.
