The Championships, Wimbledon II - Gentlemen's Singles
GRAND SLAM - Friday (2nd Semifinal) - Wimbledon,
United Kingdom - Grass

  • With an 0-4 record against Daniel Páez Blanco, eighth seed Jefferson Drake seemingly had the world against him as he looked to back up a tiring quarterfinal encounter with Radek Špidlá that went to 12-10 in the fifth set. Adding to the adversity, Blanco produced his best tennis yet to beat Sven Oxenstierna on Wednesday in straight sets.
In a tense opening to the second match on Centre Court, it was Blanco who drew first blood in the third game as he broke Drake before the East CWLander returned the set to service immediately. In a surprisingly low quality first set, Drake looked tentative and failed to pull the trigger when necessary as the Spaniard claimed the first set 6-4.

The second set continued in much the same vein as Drake continually found himself being drawn into protracted rallies with the Spaniard. This time, though, he found more free points on serve and did enough to take the set to a tiebreaker. There he finally started to lift his intensity, and closed out the set with an approach to the net 7-3 in the breaker.

In four previous meetings, Drake had managed to take just two sets of the Spanish second seed. At 3-0, though, he looked set to double that before Blanco managed to create more chances of the eighth seed's serve to take the third set to a tiebreaker as well. Drake let another 3-0 lead slip as the Spanish gun clawed back to take a 2-1 lead with his first set point.

Knowing that he needed something special to claim victory, Drake began to change things up and looked to end points quickly to avoid another draining five-set thriller. Blanco was steady as ever at the baseline, and continually caused Drake troubles with a kick serve out wide as he looked surprisingly strong on serve. The new World No. 1 didn't, however, manage to take the fourth set to another tiebreaker though as he was broken late by a charged up Drake whose game was finally beginning to work for him. A cross-court forehand and then a powerful double-handed backhand volley to the open court gave him the set 7-5 and ensured he would play his second five-set thriller in three days.

In their last meeting, Blanco bested Drake over five sets in the quarter finals of Roland Garros. But it was clear that this was Drake's turf as he turned the screws early with some confident tennis. From 1-4 down, there was no coming back this time for the Spaniard as Drake ended the hoodoo to advance to his maiden Grand Slam final as Blanco sent a rally backhand long; Drake through 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-1.

With a win in Sunday's final, Drake will be the new World No. 3. With a loss, he will be the new World No. 4. Either way, he is the top ranked CWLander after this week. Should Davis pull off the upset, he will be the new World No. 8. With a loss, he rises to World No. 11.

Wimbledon II: Men's Final Preview

In the biggest match in CWLand tennis history, it is East vs. West in the final of the The Championships at Wimbledon. In one corner is the eighth seed and East CWLand No. 1 Jefferson Drake who is by far the more credentialed player and a player who has appeared in more PTA Tour finals. In the other corner is a virtual unknown - 23rd seed Heath Davis is a fan favourite, but the casual fan has only been introduced to one of the top ranked doubles players in the world over the past week.

Both players were gifted straightforward first weeks. Drake was the only player to lose a set and neither player met a seeded opponent. Where they have come into their own, though, has been in the second week. Drake managed to live up to his ironman reputation with five-set wars against the #2 and #3 players in the world. Davis, meanwhile, came from a set down twice to beat top ten players who have had second week experience at Wimbledon.

For Davis, this final is deserved. After spending most of season I struggling with fitness and weight, he has finally shown his ability after slimming down and increasing his endurance. Despite having appeared in just one PTA Tour singles final, he is no stranger to finals day at Grand Slams with a record of 2-1 in doubles finals.

Drake, meanwhile, has appeared in nine PTA Tour finals - but this is no doubt his biggest. He too has appeared in a Grand Slam doubles final - against Davis - earlier this season.

While Davis' serve is no doubt his biggest weapon (he fired down the second most aces of any player this tournament), it would be wrong to suggest that is all he has. He's shown regularly this week some massive groundstrokes to the point that his forehand is arguably his most dangerous weapon.

Drake, meanwhile, is one of the best baseliners in the world but has shown a prodigious talent at the net. If he manages to draw Davis into longer rallies, there is little doubt he will be in a better position. The great thing about Drake is how aggressively he defends - he has some of the biggest shots in the game and hits it flat. He had troubles against Blanco's top spin on Friday, but he won't have that problem against Davis who hits a ball in a similar manner.

While the big names are missing from this final, stylistically this is set to be a ripper. The big question is how will Drake recover from his grueling week. He is the five-set king, and we think he will do enough to pick up the victory. Prediction: Jefferson Drake, Wimbledon champion, in five sets.

It's the final that the crowds didn't know they wanted, but they secretly always wanted.

Drinking a gallon of milk in preparation. C'mon!

I can't guarantee when I can do it or how long it takes - what's the time difference between here and NZ? Pretty sure it is 8 hours between here and dcye, but not sure.

The only thing that could have topped this final would have been the world's 2 best doubles players in the final. Despite that, I'll be cheering hard for Davis...:)
