Not clear if there was even a political motive tbf. The lack of some loony crowing about it would be unusual in such a scenario.
It's a real pattern now though, that no one seems to care about at all. Not just Germany, but the mayor in Poland, the journalist in Brazil, and others in the last few months alone.

Far-right taking a hit and the Greens making big gains in the Austrian snap elections. I could be wrong but this seems to be a bit of a trend this year.

We've seen some pretty grim power grabbing stuff over the past month, including the disgusting UK Coronavirus bill, but this is beyond the pale.

Tensions between EU states Italy, Spain and Portugal and the so called "Frugal Four", Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden over the EU response to Covid-19 seem to be causing great concern in the corridors of power in Brussels. I could never understand why they are not called the "Frugal Five". Surely, when it comes to economics and finance, Germany are naturally allied with these four.

With good cause too, it would seem. The EU demonstrates, and not only with this, that when push comes to shove, their project will find it very difficult to survive. We should be very glad that we are out of it.

Always interested reading the depraved ramblings of someone that thinks the EU is far too involved in a nation-state when it comes to the UK but not involved enough in a nation-state when someone like Italy (and no doubt Spain re: the Catalan stuff) gets upset about its own lack of money.

Your choice of adjective to describe "ramblings" would be revelatory had we not previously read some of your other stuff.

Interesting that the EU now seems to be considering legal action against Germany. Biting the hand that feeds it, or what? A further 5 years for the EU may now be an optimistic view (in Brussels).

We? Touch of hubris there.

Each and every thing you say just shows that you don't get how it works. You still think in terms of nation states.

Most people do. The next few years will probably see the dreams of European federalists exposed as being just that; a dream.
