Match 1:First one and tough as nails. Dufresne is truly ispirative character, but I'll go with Hal 9000. Fascinanting persona, evil, chilling but ultimately tragic figure. All Hal ever wanted is survive.

Match 2: Here I don't have a one seconf of thought. Angel Eyes by miles. Better character overall.

Match 3:Ellen Ripley wins. While Vader is one of the most important character in movie history, he is still just a puppet in Emperor's hands.

Match 4: Classic match. Old school robot vs great leader of revolution. Arnold's probably best role to date, a killing machine with neo remorse. But just a reprogrammed to follow orders. V is one cool mofo.

Can someone explain to me what's great about Andy Dufresne as a character? Great film n'all, but the guy just seems to pout and sook through two and a half hours. I've never really thought of him as one of the great characters of cinema.

HDS Personally I think Andy has the underdog side where he's paying for a crime didn't commit. So you're invested in his wellbeing during the movie. And the 'pouting' you refer to is his quiet yet determined persona to get through the tough situation. He goes to deep places as well. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that he had killed himself in his cell. That was the character that I know I had become invested in during the movie. A well portrayed and written character IMO

I will have to go with ANDY since I still don't get 2001: ASO

HAN SOLO because he is the quintessential hero for the average bloke.

RIpley v Vader is a tough one, but RIPLEY would have to be the No.1 female action-hero of all-time.

It's actually pretty tough playing a robot. But Arnie does life-less acting so well. T-800.

Prison didn't break Andy. After all the things he went through in prison, it should have broke him. His stubbornness to not admit defeat to the system that wronged him, by escaping after 19 years of patient 'sooking' is endearing to say the least. Also the fact that he is best friends with Morgan Freeman.

Andy Dufresne: I have no enemies here.
Red: Yeah? Wait a while. Word gets around. The Sisters have taken quite a likin' to you. Especially Boggs.
Andy Dufresne: I don't suppose it would help if I told them that I'm not homosexual.
Red: Neither are they. You have to be human first. They don't qualify.

Later.....

Boggs: Now, I'm gonna open my fly and you're gonna swallow what I give ya to swallow. And after you swallow mine you're gonna swallow Rooster's cause ya done broke his nose and I think he oughta have something to show for it.
Andy Dufresne: Anything you put in my mouth you're gonna lose.
Boggs: Naw, you don't understand. You do that and I'll put all eight inches of steel in your ear.
Andy Dufresne: All right. But you should know that sudden serious brain injury causes the victim to bite down hard. In fact, I hear the bite reflex is so strong they have to pry the victims jaws open with a crowbar.
Boggs: Where do you get this s***?
Andy Dufresne: I read it. You know how to read, you ignorant f***?

I don't think Andy sooks.
