CWBCC Inquiry
The CWBCC requested a response from Richard Twyman, giving some explanation for the recent string of poor results.

Richard Twyman's Press Conference
Morning all,

Well it was a very dissapointing result and after the match I sat down with the lads and went through the game and we were all pretty decided where we lost the game.

It was late on in our 2nd inngs when this happened:

Neil Pickup lbw b. Butcher 36 43 8 0 83.7%

Now normally this would be a good thing for our number 11 to score 36 runs, however as most know Neil has become the whipping boy of the batting and unfortuantly the lads couldn't stop laughing for the next day and as a result the concentration was nowhere to be seen and the many dropped catches proved costly. Also I think it didn't help when my vice-captain (Andrew Cloete) went running into the English dressing room and started shouting, "HAHA your all rubbish, you let Pickup score 36, and you all should be ashamed of yourselves" - I think it could have just pumped them up more.

Ok, perhaps that wasn't the real reason, so I'll be serious again now.

Basically over the game we did well and were dominating alot of the periods, but we just let all the pressure to win a Test match build up and it was released in their 2nd innings. However, as captain I take full responsiblity for the result and there are most certainly areas that we need to improve in before the next match.

Questions?

What about your own performance?

Well unfortuantly although I have been in fine touch for most of the series and all the hard work in the nets, this week was just not going to be mine. The English bowlers bowled very well and I am not going to run off to the nets and start changing my game just yet. As I said, it's really my first very bad performance of the series.

How do you see the next Test going? Any changes planned?

Well we are playing back-to-back Tests so there is very little time avalible to make radical changes. I suppose, like England, we will make a call on the morning of the Test after myself and the selectors have had chance to have a good look at the surface.

I'd like to thank the very nice press people for comming and see you again after the next Test.

Breaking News: The Tour Manager Responds
Tour manager for the Cricket Web XI tour of England stated at a press conference held two hours after Richard Twyman's statement:

"In my communications with the Board and selectors, we have come to accept Richard Twyman's explanation. Further more, we are highly impressed with the way in which he has been running the team. The results have been disappointing since the Natwest final, but there have been encouraging signs and we understand that these conditions may take a while to get used to. Drastic change in attitude and an increased effort must be shown by the players if we are to salvage any pride let alone a win in this series."

CWBCC's Reuben Verghese Announces Tour:
"I'm thrilled to confirm this tour to Australia <yadda yadda yadda> and CWXI and the Dev teams have been changing and continue to develop hard <yadda yadda yadda> most of the following players have already stamped their name on the sheet based on past performances, however the new names have been performing well in Dev Cricket and we could be in for a few suprises when the Final 14 CWXI squad is named to tour Australia. It will be a tough Tour <yadda yadda yadda> the Australians are the best in current form in world cricket, and they boast many world class players and can easily topple teams with their aggression, team work and individual brilliance. Camps Withdrew From The 5th Test
Due to personal struggles and a lack of form, Liam Camps withdrew his name from the selection pool for the fifth Test.

---

Andre Maddocks voiced concerns to the Press:
"Little or no consistency has existed in the selection process during this tour - would it not make sense to include the best 11 cricketers? Whether or not I am in the side does not make a difference - it's just frustrating to see team-mates being treated poorly and having their confidence sapped by ill-advised selections. If we achieve nothing on this tour, at least it should be to mould a team capable of competeing at the top, which this is far from at the moment."

The CWBCC Response
"I challenge Andre to point out the error in the various selections and non-selections on this tour. If he can do so, then the matter will be pursued further."

Maddocks continued to speak out
"The non-selection of Neil Pickup and Sangrah Bhatia in Test sides where Pickup had been our number one spinner for a long time, and Bhatia earnt his spot, only to be dumped after one match.

One must not forgot the original non-selection of Corey Taylor in the squad when looking back on selection matters."

The CWBCC Response
"Out-of-sorts, Neil Pickup was replaced by Sangrah Bhatia due to Bhatia's good performances. However, Bhatia was hit for 4.75 on debut. For the 4th Test, Reuben Verghese was set to return and had to displace someone, so young Bhatia missed out.

Corey "Top Cat" Taylor had a very inconsistent tour of England and had done little to merit initial selection to go to Australia. Still, he has come in and made good which is very pleasing."

A further release:

"The selections were made with great thought and before going into the tour Taylor was not in great form after the tour of England. We felt that his presence in the team would be a liability, but pending an injury his callup was always intended. Whereas the dropping of Neil Pickup, who is self-proclaimed to be the top spinner for CW XI, and might be, is due to the lack of form. He has been rested to re-think his bowling strategies and hopefully to make an impact in training sessions or warmup games.
Bhatia has been dropped after 1 test due to comeback from injury by Reuben Verghese."

Maddocks commented casually to the Press
"Yet how, all of a sudden, is Verghese, a regular Test player?

With all due respect he's really not done anything noteworthy at the highest level to be included as first choice spinner - unlike Pickup, who has a proven Test record."

Pickup addressed the issue briefly
"TWO MATCHES!! And dropped for a can't-bat-can't-bowl-all-rounder (Verghese).

India don't drop Tendulkar for Yuvraj after a few bad games.

It's biased, self-serving selection."

Maddocks ranted on
"The fact remains Verghese is not good enough to be played as the lone spinner in the side - he's picked to take wickets and over his career he has struggled to do so.

It was stated that Verghese serve a purpose as a second spinner - by no means is Verghese up to the job of first spinner in a Test squad. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

It may be just be me, but I'd be interested to see if Verghese got a game without any relatives on the Selection Panel."
