Mistakes in selection on this tour by England

Guys if Burgey is calling a finger spinner good they must be bloody brilliant.

There is an old adage from a few years back - Australia lose when they don't pick Lyon. He's seriously the best finger spinner in Australian conditions I've ever seen.

No finger spinners do well here (though Peter Taylor was my favourite player as a kid). Ali is the best England have. Crane was picked precisely because Ali was going to play every match. If you pick him for Sydney you'll regret it because he'll go the distance.

People are starting to overrate Lyon a bit. He's had a good year and an excellent series, but still averages 33 at home and 31 overall. At the end of the day he can only be so good, he's a finger spinner. He's never going to get that average below 30.

Lyon's improved, which is where the hype is coming from.

He used to be crap on SC type pitches (UAE tour and India until he got lucky in the final game with the whitewash confirmed) before he turned it around starting from the tour of Sri Lanka where he started to look like he might finally learn to bowl in those conditions. Then he got that good Border Gavaskar series in earlier this year, feasted on Bangladesh and has looked very very good in this series.

But of course like you say there's only so far he can go with that type of bowling.

Averaging 33 as a finger spinner in Australian conditions is exceptional.

They're all a tier or two above Lyon as bowlers (except Vaas, dunno his average in Asia, probably late 20s at best).

Lyon will definitely get that average under 30 IMO. Seems a bizarre thing to rule out completely when he’s just taken 63 @ 23.56.

He just plays too much in Australia, and when he does play in Asia it's against Asian batsmen who have grown up on spin (Minnows like Bangladesh don't count). Lyon averaging under 30 in Australia would be like an Indian spinner averaging under 15

Who selected the selectors? Have a hunch that there are a few selection errors there.
