CricketWeb have made one change to the side that lost the 1st YODI to West Indies. CW Black batsmen Ashley Arnold has been brought in to boast the batting line up and add an extra option with the ball. Making way is CW Green seamer Josh Forner.

Playing on the spinner friendly Pickford Reserve pitch the selectors have desided to put greater faith in spinners Ritchie and Howgate. A bold move considering both are seen as batting all rounders, that could either leave them short in bowling or provide them with the extra dimension to their attack to see off the West Indies' batting line up.

Fighting Webheads level series at Pickford

Cricket Web Under-19 recorded their first win of the series, beating West Indies Under-19 by 4 wickets at Pickford Reserve. It was a great team effort, as six bowlers shared 9 West Indian wickets, then every batsman to the crease contributed solidly in the chase.

West Indies U-19 were off to a shaky start when they lost key batsmen Kieran Powell (5) and Steven Jacobs (6) to be reduced to 27-2. But positive strokeplay from Adrian Barath (47) and Darren Bravo (41) got the tourists back on track, before their captain Sharmarh Brooks lashed 83 from 73 balls to push on to a good total. The innings was full of impressive strokes, none better than his straight six off his opposite number, Zac Ritchie.

At 257-9 the young West Indians were in confident mood to exploit the slow Pickford surface with their multitude of spinners. But early on the much-hyped pacemen fell flat against some attractive strokeplay. The Cricket Web openers put on 50 for the first wicket before Matt Luff (22) picked out Jacobs with a square drive.

He was replaced by Ashley Arnold and the Cricket Web Black batsman stamped his authority with a couple of pugnacious cover drives early on. At the other end, Rob Malone ticked along to 43 at a healthy rate, then miscued an off-drive to be caught at mid-off. There was no collapse, however. Instead Bosco Fitzsimmons continued his form from the first game and gave good support in a partnership of 81. Arnold grew in confidence with every stride down the pitch. He stepped out to medium-pacer Shacaya Thomas and flicked him wristily and powerfully over the midwicket fence.

With another wristy flick, off the offspin of Permaul, he raised a fine half-century from 60 balls. But on 60 he showed his first bit of uncertainty and was bowled through the gate, attempting a cover drive against the spin of Bonner. Though the dismissal opened a small opportunity for West Indies U-19, they failed to capitalize. Fitzsimmons combined with Ben Read to steady the innings with a stand of 38.

At 205-4, Fitzsimmons had a rush a blood and was stumped off the bowling of Brooks, and Zac Ritchie only had 13 when he nicked Johnson to the wicketkeeper. But the game was then in the hands of the Webheads. Needing 19 runs from the last 24 balls, they were not put off when Read was caught behind for a run-a-ball 50. Liam Howgate entered with 10 needed from the last 14 balls and tucked his first ball away for a single.

He faced up to Jason Dawes in the 49th over and was beaten first ball. The next two balls raced away to the square boundary on either side of the wicket. First a cut shot sent the ball flying to point, then a hook shot saw the scores level. The fourth ball was a yorker, but Howgate was game to it and pushed it to mid-on with a quick sprint for the winning run. A relieved Ritchie was the first man on the pitch to congratulate his teammates.

West Indies Under-19 innings 257-9 (50 overs)
SSJ Brooks 83 (73), A Barath 43 (47), DM Bravo 41 (47)

Really impressive team performance. Pretty much everyone contributed with either runs or wickets. Hopefully we use this as the platform to build on in our next few matches.
