I'm not saying one is a better pick that the other, just found it bizarre that you would pick someone for an Ashes 11 because they had a moderate Ashes record.

It wasn't "because" of it. My use of the phrase "even though" was to indicate that it was in spite of it. Tim Robinson averages nearly 50 against Australia in the same number of Tests as Broad and I would pick him ahead of Broad as well.
