The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Vettori is a decent shout actually but Shakib is a better all-rounder for me. And then it's a case of figuring out the best guy to partner Shakib and I think Moeen and maybe Afridi somewhere in the order are the best bets. Maybe Hooper ahead of Moeen?

Gun fielders in specific positions

Bob Simpson (slip)
Ricky Ponting (point)
Greg Chappell (slip)
Viv Richards (point/cover)
Allan Border (mid wicket)
Gary Sobers (short leg/utility)
Allan Knott +
Ravi Jadeja (utility)
Allan Davidson (leg gully/square leg)
Joel Garner (gully)
Terry Alderman (slip)
Sobers best position and where he spent most of his time was at slip. He was one of the very best ever at the position.

The ATG and great batsmen who were also superb in the cordon

Garry Sobers
Steve Smith
Brian Lara
Jacques Kallis
Greg Chappell
Wally Hammond

Ricky Ponting
Everton Weekes
A.B deVilliers
Bobby Simpson

May have missed some names, but a respectable top 10.

Viv was very good in the slips. Not quite as elite as those I referenced imo, close though. I could be wrong, but I don't recall him making the difficult / spectacular catches, but never really saw him drop much either.

The other 3 weren't quite ATG batsmen.

One possible future name could be Kohli. He isn't always in there, but when he is in 3rd he is not bad at all, very clean when I've seen him.

Kohli's taken some good ones recently, but has a reputation for dropping quite a few (been better in recent times though). Rahane is usually very good, but he's dropped several catches recently.

Kohli's dropped more than anyone I've seen in that 14-18 period. Improved slowly since then and has taken a few stunners, but I don't think I'll ever be comfortable calling him superb.

Jayawardene was elite but maybe falls short on the batting front.

I really enjoy it when pace bowlers are also really good slippers or gully fielders. Jimmy Anderson and Terry Alderman are/were very good slippers. Joel Garner was really good in the gully.

It really is a very difficult and specialised aspect of the game and why the great ones were / are so valuable. The 2nd slip position in particular is so vital.

And Kohli seems to be improving but still have some way to go to join the list.
