With Italian and Austrian elections coming-up soon, as well as the French and German elections next year I thought that European politics probably deserves its own thread.

In France right now Fillon and Juppe prepare to face-off in the Republican primaries after eliminating Sarkozy.

Those who were bored of the "lesser of 2 evils" type debating when discussing Trump and Clinton, because if its between Le Pen and Fillon who is pretty hard right, then you ain't heard nothing yet

I think Le Pen will be cheering Fillon today, she polls better against him and you worry if Fillon with his hardline stance on so many issues such as immigration, jobs, pensions etc will alienate the left which to be fair Juppe who is more moderate won't.

More I think, discuss andd read about this election, I have to admit, I am probably wrong on MLP been happy about running against Fillon. The beatdown of Juppe was savage, and while his economic policies may alienate some of the left, he will still eat into Le Pen's base with his hard line stance on immigration, multiculturalism, social issues.

I heard that they'd lost the referendum and thought "meh". Then I heard Renzi had resigned and thought for ****ing ****s sake. Had been the best current European head of state by a distance.

"Populist" has mostly been used to describe a particular generation of crap Latin American heads of state that closely resemble Trump and Le Pen. Trump especially, now that it's clear his economic policy really is just "spend more tax less". I think it's a better descriptor than "fascist", although they do also have quite a lot in common with fascists. I know that for different people it has different connotations, but that doesn't make it any worse than generic terms like "conservative" or "liberal".

Yeah I haven't read up on the details but that's pretty much the mainstream view. The establishment view, in fact.
