The TV show thread (many spoilers)

I just never liked the theme of Mad Men. I can see how objectively it is well made and well-acted and so on. But I've never really enjoyed 60s noir type fiction.

My favourite TV series remains Game of Thrones. Admitting that these days though can get me virtual lynched. Discovered it only last year, saw it twice already and pretty sure I'll finish it 3rd time within this year.

Nothing wrong with it being your fave tbh. To each their own and all that.

The first three seasons are some of the best television in a very long time indeed. Shame it starts to decline really badly almost immediately after that (imo), but I generally enjoyed it even at its worst.

Haha it's second for me, but agree with the sentiment. No matter the writing decline, it remains the most enjoyable TV world to revisit.

Mad Men is amazing. So beautifully made with really insightful characters and storylines.

People relate to the characters in very different ways, which is one of my favourite things about the show. It's not uncommon to hate Draper. CPR posted before about seeing him as more or less a pure villain. I mostly found myself hoping his better traits would win out over his bad ones... which put me in a similar position to a loooot of the women on the show.

Agree with a lot of that, but this is the first time I seen someone mildly criticise Season 4 which for me was the most exhilarating season.

Season 4 was when they accidentally turned a *** scene into a rape, which was when I stopped watching.

Before that it was properly great, though.

I think it's fairly common to start out being kinda into Don Draper and his whole schtick but eventually you do loathe him - then kind of root for him at the last minute.

Despite the patchy acting and dialogue, I was a big fan of GoT until the 4th season. In fact I think the 4th season ****ing nailed SoS and is possibly my favourite TV season ever. Very soon tfter the original material ran out though, It turned really awful IMO.

I'm also very biased because I spent some months *invested* in the rich, conspirational, political, batshit crazy world of the the books and it enraged me when some of the best moments/characters were cheapened for no discernible reason. Euron for instance is possibly the most badass character in the books. His kingsmoot speech is the best moment in the books IMO. I mean just listen to this:

It's legitimate goosebumps inducing sort of stuff. To think they took that and squandered it like it had no meaning, FMD. There's also the OG 'The North Remembers' from Wyman Manderly, Kevan Lannister's death speech, I can keep going on and on but the vast majority of the most chilling, beautiful moments from the books were either bastardized completely, stripped of the moral context and given to an underdog protagonist for a cheap pop or left out entirely.

I managed to stay away from it despite it being the only thing people ever seemed to talk about in April and May for close to a decade.

Agree that season 4 was the best one. Whichever season had that godawful dorne/sandsnakes subplot (was it season 5) is the worst one for me. The drop off in quality from 4 to 5 was massive.

This is a good Mad Men take:

Pete's story arc is one of the most satisfying in TV history imo. What's great is the contrast between him and Harry Crane, who you start out liking as he's seemingly the least sleazy then turns into absolutely the worst of them all.

I re watched first 2 seasons of Dark, yes. Glad I did. There were so many callbacks and plot in general so intricate and complex that I wouldn't have followed and enjoyed season 3 without a re-watch.
.
I’ve started season 2 again before starting season 3.

Soundtracks in dark are awesome

Season 4 was when the writing became dubious and characters started to behave in ways that were inconsistent with...their character, b cause the plot demanded it.

It was still a decent watch, and it certainly declined further, and a lot more drastically, after this. But this is where the slide noticeably began, imo.

Season 1 of Fargo is ATG territory. Season 2 is fun - Bokeem Woodbine and Patrick Wilson are outstanding. Great acting aside there is a bit of 'what if Fargo, but 70s nostalgia' to it more than a first season quality storyline.

Season 3 is pretty underrated. David Thewlis' villain being entirely his own thing instead of trying to emulate and compete with Billy Bob Thornton's original run made the season imo.

Yeah, my preferred Fargo seasons are definitely 1 > 3 > 2. I'd probably say the same about True Detective as well.

Honestly True Detective is a terrible show, the first season was hugely watchable because of the two main leads, but really that was it, oh and a decent bit of soft-porn , but the plotting was average at best.

Yet hey I'd watch the first series again because of the chemistry of those two, but wouldn't watch any of the rest of it unless you paid me.

twin peaks is my favourite series but i think fargo has to be the best series that i've watched. dark comedy, an element of society commentary that doesn't slap you in the face (i like a bit of nuance), moral horizons and a lot of gray area, the characters and the acting just mesh so well and the chemistry of the cast wins out eleven times out of ten, the plots are intricate and well thought out and there's surprises present around every corner. genuine piece of elite television.
