Can we invest in sites like canbet.com being an Indian citizen.. Is it against law?

It's always murky when the state forbids it because it's reliant on foreign companies being compliant with local legislation, and unless they have a vested interest in it, that tends not to happen. Usually the risk is greater for you personally as well, because you cop the punishment as opposed to the provider.

I do know that there is a region in India (forget the name of it now) which is wanting to develop and sell a few online sports betting licences as a way of raising revenue, and Betfair is lobbying pretty hard to make that a reality, but until that happens all the operations I know of in India are illegal.

As betting is illegal in many part of the world including India. But then also many people still do betting on cricket matches.
