Why are people getting crazy about Italy being a basket-case politically again?

it's not pro or anti EU, it's not pro or anti "populism", it's just ****ing Italy being Italy.

41 PM's since 1946. Everyone wants to make everything into a narrative, this isn't one, just crazy. Is Berlusconi in prison yet or could he be back?
Rejecting a constitutional change is neither here nor there. The important part of the referendum result was Renzi resigning, and thus opening the door for the populists.

Luigi Di Maio from the Five Star Movement must be looking forward to the coming elections.

Yes it's pretty bad.

Arrest of refugee in rape and murder in Germany threatens Merkel's immigration policy

.....Foreign diplomats, party officials and political scientists have warned that any sharp upturn in crimes by refugees or their involvement in a major terror attack could severely damage if not destroy Merkel’s reelection hopes.

The killing of Ladenburger, whose father Clemens Ladenburger is a top-ranking German official working for the European Commission in Brussels, had been in the national news for several weeks after her body was found in the Dreisam River in Freiburg on Oct.*18. She was a top student and had volunteered as a worker in her spare time at a refugee shelter near her dormitory.

And the worst of all.

This cover-up of *** assaults in Sweden is a gift for xenophobes

The news that the Swedish authorities covered up widespread sexual assaults by immigrant gangs on teenage girls at a Stockholm music festival, and possibly other incidents too, is immensely damaging for race relations in Sweden because it conforms so precisely to two stereotypes.

The first, widely believed in nationalist circles, is that immigrants to Sweden are responsible for the huge rise in reported rapes in recent years. The second, more true, and much more widely believed, is that you cannot trust respectable Swedish opinion to be honest about the bad effects of immigration.

....It is absolutely clear – with the publication of internal memos by the newspaper Dagens Nyheter – that the Stockholm police failed to report the *** assaults at the festival for fear of worsening ethnic tensions. And it was understood by all parties that this would lead to an electoral advantage for the Sweden Democrats.

The organisers, who also allegedly knew what was going on, were concerned for the success of the festival and did not want to frighten away the teenagers who were its target audience.

So teenage girls were systematically assaulted and robbed by gangs of young foreign men because too many powerful people found their suffering was inconvenient. The result of this cover-up will be far more damaging than the truth could have been.

It's interesting that the headline focused on 'xenophobes', which had nothing to do with anything, and omitted 'many powerful people' which had everything to do with the article being written in the first place. The mainsteam media just can't help its philosophical bias even in an otherwise well written article.

The mainstream media heaved a sigh of relief when Hofer was defeated on the weekend. But really, the Austrian experience highlights the continuing collapse of centrist politics in Europe. There is little for Merkel et al to rejoice about after the election of Alexander van der Bellen

The following article written in the Economist was published after the previous nullified election. But its conclusion remains spot-on;

A surprise win for the left in Austria’s contest of extremes

.....Whatever path mainstream parties choose to counter the rise of the extremes, it should probably not be the Austrian one. The grand coalition government pandered to the FPÖ rather than ostracising it, moving in its direction on refugee policy. This only made the centrists seem less distinct from the FPÖ, and less forthright. Centre-right and centre-left parties in many European countries have taken similar approaches, striking half-hearted anti-immigrant and anti-EU postures to defend their flanks. The message of the Austrian election is that European publics are instead hungry for politicians with clear ideals—and that it is a very close call as to whether they prefer right-wing or left-wing ones.*

'Muslim veils not appropriate': Seeking re-election, Angela Merkel talks tough | Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

Merkel panders to conservatives. Though she speaks about face covering veil which has grounds to be prohibited in certain places (airport, offices etc.) compared to the burkini banned by France.
That sort of silly tokenism used to work, but I don't think that it fools the conservatives or anyone else any more. Merkel is doing little more than 'cucking about' and everyone knows it.

Nothing can save her political hide now, end of story.

Merkel's approval ratings were in the 70s last I checked.

Merkel is a conservative, leading a conservative party, having spent most of the last decade implementing conservative economic policies for Europe.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has failed in her duty to protect the German people by formulating, and then defending, an atrocious 'Open Borders' policy.

She should resign.

This is a bit rich coming from a government that really is Islamo-Fascist. Anyway, if Wilders wins by a couple of percentage on Wednesday he should call Ergogan and thank him for this latest debacle in Europe which couldn't come at a better time for his 'Party for Freedom'.

Dutch police break up pro-Erdogan protest

Dutch riot police have broken up a rally in support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hours after a minister was refused entry to the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam.

The Turkish minister was then escorted to the German border and expelled.

Police used water cannons to break up the protesters, who had gathered outside the consulate as the diplomatic row between the two nations escalated.

Protesters were reportedly throwing bottles and mobbing police cars.

Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, Turkey's minister of family and social policies, had arrived by road on Saturday ahead of a rally planned to help harness the votes of Turks living in the Netherlands.

They will be voting in a referendum next month on whether to expand Mr Erdogan's powers.

But when she arrived, Dutch authorities refused to allow her entry to the consulate, sparking a stream of angry tweets.......

Mr Erdogan has lashed out at Germany and the Netherlands, denouncing the Dutch government as "Nazi remnants and fascists", while accusing Germany of "Nazi practices".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has condemned the Nazi jibe as "unacceptable", while Mr Rutte dismissed it as a "crazy remark".

But Mr Erdogan escalated the rhetoric after the Netherlands banned his foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu from entering the country by plane by threatening to block Dutch flights.

Man, we all like to talk about how, well, Trump-y Trump is but Erdogan really still sets the standard in that regard. Complete loon.

Rutte is trying to takesome support of Wilders with this saga, very interesting to see how he handles this. Wilders will be loving it however.

The two of them had a debate a few hours ago. Nothing special, apart from Rutte firmly stating (again) he will NOT form a coalition with Wilders.

Dutch elections are far less exciting than many foreign (as well as many Dutch) media want to tell us. It's very unlikely that Wilders will win more than 25 (out of 150) seats. And absolutely no other party will even try to from a coalition with him. So, we will probably end up having a centre-right / balanced coaltion. Not an easy formation though.....

You have to wonder if Erdogan knows how gormless he sounds by crying Nazi when his attempt to cause a revolt in another country miserably fails.

I have money on Rutte's mob to get the most seats, would you recommend me topping up on that bet?
