chose a good time. If he wasn't careful his average might've climbed above 3, tarnishing his legacy forever.

but seriously all the best to him. Been one of those guys written off time and time again yet always doing the job whether we had faith in him or not.

A great workhorse of NZ test cricket. Probably fortunate to have reached maturity in the fallow period between the Cairns-Nash-Doull era and the (hopefully) emerging Boult-Southee era. On the other hand, he might've finished his career with better figures if he'd had the support of Bond and Mark 1 Franklin more often.

Still Martin played a notable part in most of New Zealand's test match successes during that period and could usually be relied to pick up 3/90 even in unhelpful conditions. Will certainly miss his one man crusade to bring the headband back into fashion.

Great servant to NZ cricket as previously said, and more importantly gave us these brilliant memories:

Virat Kohli (c)
Will always remember his spell in the 2nd innings vs. India in 2010 at Ahmedabad which almost won NZ a game on what was an absolute pancake track. Was a great effort.

Workhorse is a great description. A top servant for cricket.

This. What a spell.

Have to factor in that 2 of these 6 tests were played against arguably the weakest side ever to play test cricket. His stats from the other four are pretty similar to his overall career record - though 4 tests is way too small a sample to make any definitive conclusions.

A good servant to us over the years. Had some fantastic moments for us, coming back from the wilderness to bowl SA out in 2004 as well as that test in India in 2010. Good luck to him in retirement.

Was a good servant for us. Not the best we've produced, even during his era, but he stayed fit which is something NZ bowlers don't really do. Of the ones that made test level Bond, O'Brien and Franklin were better but two of them crocked themselves and O'Brien left early for family reasons. Martin managed to both juggle his real world commitments, stay fit and bowl to international standard over a 15 year career. Very worthy of great respect.

There was defintely a period before his final golden summer where if we had anything better he would have been dropped for good. Even then he lived by the skin of his teeth for a few years. Steve Harmison is the only other bowler I can think of who can look like God in one innings then join Vettori in being innocuous in the next.

I think he was both overrated and underrated at the same time.

Overrated by NZ media and talkback, and underrated by CW including yours truly.
