politics

Lil' Johnny goes to his dad and asks, "What is politics?" Dad
says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way. I'm the
breadwinner of the family, so let's call me Capitalism. Mommy is
the administrator of the money, so we'll call her the
Government. We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call
you The People. The nanny, well, consider her The Working Class.
Your baby brother, we'll call him The Future. Now go think about
this and see if it makes sense."

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has
said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying and
runs to his room only to find that his diapers are very soiled.
So the little boy goes to his parents' room. Mom is sound
asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room.
Finding the door locked, he looks through the peephole and sees
his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to
bed.

The next morning, the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I
think I understand what politics is now."

"Good son, tell me in your own words then what politics are."

The little boy replies, "Well, while Capitalism is screwing the
Working Class, the Government is sound asleep, the People are
being ignored and the Future is in deep poop"

that sums up politics eh

'Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely'

Never truer words were spoken.

Okay well who wants to start on a political discussion. Watch out, though; I'm an expert in middle-Eastern politics, American politics, feminism and the war in Vietnam. :D Not bad for a science grad with a dual chem major, eh?? hehe

You'll have to be a little more specific than that but to answer yours about democracy:

America isn't a pure democracy. It's democratic republic with a formal constitution that dictates the parameters for how laws are made. One big difference between a democracy and a democratic republic is that in a democracy, majority rules over all decisions which affect the whole community. In a democratic republic, majority rules in deciding who gets elected to run the country.

So in America, you're voting for people who will make decisions for you and in a democracy you make the decisions yourself. As I'm sure you can see, there are reasons why a pure democracy doesn't really work in practice.

The problem as I see it is that in the US, the boundaries of interpretations of the constitutional amendments are being pushed all the time, especially post-September 11th. The one most abused today are the amendment 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th amendments which protect the rights of people from unreasonable serches and during trials. The US has set up a military court to deal with the accused in Sep 11th where lawyers are optional and there is no jury but a panel of military top brass who do the judgments. Regardless of the fact that not all US states support the death penalty, those convicted under this court will almost certainly get that.

Anyway, have you got any questions I guess is what I should be asking? :)

well...i'm not really sure what i want to know.
anything of interest- particularly things that show how screwed up america is- i seem to have trouble convincing americans that i am in fact not jealous of them- have you ever tried to tell an american that there are parts of the constitution that you disagree with, dont even try.
there is an american girl at school who was trying to tell me that it was winter- i know its autumn, and everybody else knows it too, but she wouldn't listen, then she told me that summer and winter are each 4 monthes long, while spring and autumn are each 2 months... i basically told her to get stuffed shes wrong as far as i know, to which she replied "at least thats how it is in normal countries"

I can hardly tell the difference between the two major parties in the UK and am getting dangerously closer to extreme socialism.

Anyway - interesting distraction
