Question on ban announcements

There's a discussion going on, obviously. I'm certainly not in a rush to come to a conclusion for two reasons. Shri had been told multiple times in the Ravens subbie at Cricsim over the years that his self proclaimed heroic posts don't do a damn thing in getting the person he's targeting in trouble, so basically don't do it. Then there was also a post made in a thread over there that he's pretty active in that amounted to saying "whosoever owns this googlyeyes account, tread carefully" month or so before the latest ban. So it's on him, not me, certainly not the mod that followed rules that are clearly communicated to him and others.

Also, two things need to come to a stop immediately please:

- referring to pews or others as a Nazi
- following certain mods around in other threads and spamming them with Shri stuff

Having known victims of cyberbullying, I will happily take a strong stance on this and go down in flames LoonyBob style if need be.

Just to clarify, is it an actual prerequisite to being a Mod these days that you check your sense of humour in once you're appointed?

It has gone a bit beyond humour though. A freaking draft thread got invaded by the pews targeting. I don't mind a good mod lynching in this thread but keep it out of the rest of the forum IMO.

The mods have to walk a very fine line. On the one hand they've got posters who have been here for a decade or more who have spent thousands of hours posting and reading and they don't want to drive those people away. On the other hand they also want to encourage new, quality posters. And finally, to ensure the forum doesn't fall apart they have to enforce the rules. 99% off that is deleting spam, killing junk accounts and handing out infractions for pepper posting stupid stuff. Occasionally one of the long term/ Well liked posters posts stupid stuff and needs to be infracted/banned. If the mods do it they get targeted by the long term folks. If they don't they drive away new, potentially great posters.

I mean the mods being too lenient on long term/ well liked posters is basically why Jono left.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

How in the world is the cricsim stuff relevant beyond outright condoning his behaviour. Oooo don't be such a naughty boy Shri, wink wink nudge nudge.

I'll adjust the volatility in Cricket Chat for his sake since its gratuitous, and just refer to PEWs as Obergruppenfuhrer. But thank you for addressing this at least NP.

Not sure on the equivalency of PEWs and Amanda Todd though, respect where you're coming from however. I think you know that I know that he knows we all love him, but we're just mad at a dropped ball.

Tbf if the mod in question wasn't hiding from everything that's going on in this thread there'd be no need to approach them about it in other threads.

I don't usually partake of draft threads so wasn't aware this had happened.

Jono left because the mods took so long banning watson. No secret there. He'd have stood proudly with Shri here, noting the latter had done his bit to curtail a similar sort of account. #JonostandswithShri #IspeakforJono

My point is that the mods should have stepped in sooner in Watson's case. If Shri got a free pass to blatantly violate forum rules here then the next Watson can just point to Shri and say that he got away with it.

It's the same reason why the top bankers should have been thrown in jail in the gfc.

Exactly, Herr Obergruppenfuhrer hasn't even denied his Nationalist Socialist or Stasi sympathies.

Makes you wonder what we REALLY know about him.

Except, of course, that Shri's initial ban was itself objectively stupid and should never have been issued in the first place. Otherwise, to follow your precedent, zorax would now be banned for expressing similar sentiments towards me, and indeed Daemon, who he wished would get quarantined with corona virus a few weeks ago. Moreover, as is often the case with non-lawyers, you're falling into the error of thinking this is some sort of court of law, where there are binding precedents. It isn't and there aren't. Do you think some muppet like D/L deserves the same degree of understanding towards them as a poster like Shri, who's known and largely well liked around the place? Of course not. You aren't handing out parking fines, use your ****ing brains in dealing with people ffs. Of course there are differences between posters and between issues. If you're going to adopt across the board standards relating to stuff like Shri posted which got him banned in the first place, then you'll have three members left here because some thin-skinned but Honest wanker has a strop every time someone posts something they don't like. The joint ceases functioning.

It's not especially difficult, assuming you have an EQ in double figures, to work out when someone is having a lend of another person, and/ or whether you should exercise discretion in infracting or banning someone. This idea that moderating is some incredibly hard job and the people who do it are modern day Joans of Arc for doing it is tripe.

Gotta admit it's pretty funny that someone would go to such lengths to ignore so many people questioning his authority in one thread (created for such a purpose, mind you) just to pop up randomly in a draft thread of all places to once again act as an authority. Has to be some superiority complexes going on there.

Or, you know, the M Night Shyamalan twist I was talking about before.
