Proteas Thread

Can the Saffers fake an injury and get Botha in the team? I'd take him in this form ahead of Behardien in the playing 11.
Botha started to fade before the move to Australia. If he was at his best it actually wouldn't be the worst swop ever.

Indications are they may go with Rilee Rossouw or Wayne Parnell in the number 7 spot ahead of Farhaan Behardien depending on conditions :D

I'd opt for Rossouw in the team ahead of Farhaan or Parnell.....Farhaan's inability to bat is more damaging compared to the added benefit of his ability to bowl 4-5 overs. I'd like to see this team in most games:

Amla
de Kock
du Plessis
ABdV
Duminy
Miller
Rossouw
Philander
Steyn
Morkel
Tahir

Proteas should take the risk of not having a backup bowler instead of opting for the two useless names mentioned above.

On an absolute belter I would give Parnell a look-in. He has shown some encouraging signs recently. Langeveldt has been working on his consistency in length which has been his biggest issue then they will try and get his conventional swing back.

Jp to bowl 10 overs is fine but it would be nice if Faf could bowl again to have a back-up plan.

Yea, Proteas must take the risk of asking one of the non regulars to roll over their arm for few overs.

Parnell is a big NO in crucial games. If he is given a chance on absolute belters and performs well then he might be considered for big games too which I don't want to see.

Yeah McLaren being outright overlooked is odd. He did show he's definitely not good enough to bat #7 effectively in ODI cricket though IMO.

When he was outright overlooked I just presumed South Africa would play 4 quicks + Duminy as the bowlers. I know Tahir has a good OD record, but in Australia he will absolutely crumble against big teams in big games,.

You just can't overstate how much the retirement of Kallis hurt this ODI side. No matter which way the go with their XI it will be poorly balanced.

I half expected him to change his mind after he did so well in the BBL, particularly given South Africa have had such trouble replacing him. He might have if asked as I definitely got the feeling he only retired because he didn't think he was good enough anymore rather than not wanting to play. He's definitely not what he was, but there's no way Behardien is as good as even a 60% Kallis with either bat or ball, even if Kallis just slotted straight in at seven.

Been quite lazy here, but didn't he do pretty well in the recent ODI series in Aus and NZ?

Dunno what to make of the Saffer balance scenario.

Duminy as their fifth bowler and getting the likes of AB and Faf to bowl is very risky.

However so many reasons not to trust Behardien or Parnell at seven.

His bowling was ok at times, but not very good at all.

But his batting was deplorable, so bad that it was probably his performance there that got him dropped from the whole ODI set up.

If we're going to be honest here, Morkel being a t20 specialist hurts as well as he's a better option than anyone else in the country to bat 7 and bowl as well.
