The Australian politics thread

Two terrible speeches weren't they?

How good was the bloke photo bombing Abbott's speech. Fmd a new pm and the AFP let that happen on the night he's elected. They must have been out the back having a party pie. Also good to see Tony's daughters in virginal white. Cardinal Pell will be thrilled.

Today the people of Australia will wake up a little bit confused as 2GB and the Tele tell them the economy is great, there's no need to rush to surplus and the level of debt isn't high at all. They'll have it drummed into them by next week though......

The electorate is incredibly volatile these days. Re the alp vote, add another 6-7% by virtue of the Greens preferences which come back to it, virtually automatically. If you want to talk about primary votes, compare the liberal primary vote to the labor one.

Loving the idea of Clive Palmer and Bob Katter in parliament with the other nutbags like Pyne, Joyce and Abbott. And the senate looks a dogs breakfast which is great. Gonna be like herding cats.

Happily I was 2-0 yesterday, having been in Parramatta and Chifley. Labor needs to stop worrying so much about western Sydney. All politics is local. The good local candidates like Husic Owens and Rowland won and the bad ones like Bradbury and Diaz lost. It's ever been thus. The blow-in lib booth workers in Chifley who I saw were the blokes who went after Husic's sister earlier in the week with a Stanley knife. Was having a chat with them yesterday, and interestingly they're from the Hillsong brigade. No doubt the kind of Christianity we can look forward to seeing a lot more of for the next three years.

Anyway, welcome to the Boganarium.

Oh, and Industry Minister Sophie Mirrabella.

Have a meeting with Clive next week so it will be interesting to hear his take on things - not expecting anything other than insane rambling but should be entertaining at least

Good result for Oz in that at least we have a government with a clear majority this time

As for Rudd's speech, well bizarre doesn't even begin to do it justice

As Simon Crean said, "he's a complicated character"

Good solid win! Yeee harrr

Anyway, a primary vote of 35% is in my opinion 5% higher than what Gillard would have got

Gives Labor a platform for 2016 (especially considering that 1st term Governments often suffer big swings (e.g. 1984, 1998 and 2010)

And Especially considering that Abbott has made a number of measurable pledges (e.g. $300 reduction in electricity prices, the boats to stop etc.)

Anyway, I always look for signs....and the imposter on stage for Abbott's victory speech doesn't bode well for his tenure lol

The Libs need to sort out their pre selections in nsw. This hard Right ****wittery is leading to **** candidates and is costing them seats. Sinodinos on abc last night gets it. Robb on insiders this morning doesn't.

Rudd's speech was a disgrace. That was ridiculous. The ultimate final F-U to Labor supporters.

He took no responsibility for anything, despite what Plibersek and Steve Smith were saying all night about how labour ****ed themselves up with infighting.

It was actually refreshing to see some politicians talk frankly for once

Sinodinos was solid last night. Impressive man. Did not like CFW or Fifield though.

Rudd's speech just reeked of a dick measuring contest. Was hardly gracious at all. NFI how to judge Abbott's speech, was kinda standard I guess.

Rudd will probably resign from Parliament sooner rather than later, but it's a dick act if he resigns from Parliament straight away IMO. There was a reason why there was quite a strong swing in his seat.

Comments from Kate Ellis: "What is so unfortunate is that, if we're honest about it, we know that there was far less attention on those policy achievements because there was too much focus on ourselves and on our infighting"

And Peter Beattie: "we could have won yesterday if it weren't for Labor's infighting. People were sick of us fighting"

It's safe to say, if Gillard never challenged Rudd, or even if Rudd had pissed off from parliament after losing the Prime Ministership, Labor would've won a third term, and Abbott wouldn't be the leader of the Coalition.

And now today is the day everyone decides they're political experts on Facebook. Great fun.
Has been happening for much longer than one day, that's for sure. I don't watch much TV so I don't have to put up with the ads but at least they've ended now, and they can't be anywhere near as annoying as your newsfeed being clogged up by smug winners and sore losers.

It's really not safe to say that at all, especially not just off the back of ALP quotes ffs.

Pity they didn't work this out 3 years ago. They've effectively let Tony Abbott (yes, Tony Abbott for Christ's sake) waltz into office and totally failed to take a stand and point out the good things they've done in office, all because they were too busy ****ing things up. They deserved to lose, but it's debatable as to whether the rest of us deserved to end up with Tony Abbott.
