Fat lot of good debating Trump did.
Trump at leas showed some charisma and had some decent putdowns Le Pen was outright obnoxious and absolutely clueless when was pressed about issues.

She was never winning this election, but Wednesday night hurt her and her party quite a bit. Shame. :)

That would certainly explain why a comfortable but not overwhelming result predicted by the polls turned into the absolute thrashing we see here.

There was some trace evidence pointing to Russia in the leaks' metadata apparently. The falsified leaks that were inserted along with the genuine and boring ones. Makes me consider the US election in a new light now. I don't know, makes you feel stupid and insignificant.

She was always projected to get around 35-40 in all second round scenarios with Macron. Its such a big ask for her to win this time round with her party history.

The debate was not going to save her, but a competent performance and she could have got 40+ which would have given the party some nice momentum. This is a so-so score, perfect environment for populism with a youthful opponent who was a turn off to many. Oh well.:D

But the problem with your theory that populists need to be debated is encapsulated by Trump, really. Often populists can get by on charisma and hostility, whilst deflecting their utter ineptitude when it comes to policy. Le Pen being apparently terrible at that suggests she wasn't a very competent demagogue.

Thank heavens the rich upper-class banker candidate won. Fascism had me sweating there for a moment.

It will be interesting to see how many millenials and under 25s voted for Le Pen. If this demogrpahic turned out in large numbers on her behalf then this election solves very little. France will remain divided and Le Pen will stil be around with a loyal and expanding base for the next election. Or if not, then Marion.

The political crisis continues.

A youth revolt in France boosts the far right

Marine Le Pen’s hopes of winning the presidency may rest on her appeal among the young

But Brexit and Trump were both represented very lowly by youth? If Le pen was represented more highly by youth than Macron it's an entirely different 'Political Crisis'.

Macron will assemble an able team around him but they are all "technocrats" who will do little to solve the current socio-political crisis. If it were just a matter of sorting out the economy then they'd probably be fine. But France's problems go much deeper than economic malaise because the actual social fabric is currently being stretched to the max as well.

In the end the National Front, and the traditional Republican and Socialist(?) parties will play more effective politics and have En Marche for breakfast in the upper and lower houses.

Alexis Kohler, 43: Special adviser and likely to be Mr Macron's secretary general at the Elysée. Joined a shipping company after working as chief-of-staff for Mr Macron while in government

Brigitte Trogneux, 64: President-elect's wife initially helped rewrite his speeches but is said to seek role as a "bridge" to the president

Ismaël Emelien, 29: Right-hand man and longtime friend, head of communications and strategic adviser, ex-colleague in economy ministry

Jean Pisani-Ferry, 65: Economics professor and government adviser, in charge of Macron economic programme and big ideas. Founded Brussels-based Bruegel think tank

Sophie Gagnant-Ferracci, 40: Head of campaign team. Highly experienced corporate lawyer and longstanding friend of president-elect through her husband, economist Marc Ferracci

François Bayrou, 65: Political heavyweight, head of centrist Democratic Movement party; his backing boosted Macron candidacy in February

And here is one of Macron's many socio-political obstacles which will simply not go away anytime soon because they are young, well educated, and have an ideological agenda grounded in French history and identity.

Tbh I wouldn't want to be a French person of any description right now as the country is pretty much cornered with no obvious escape.

It is ironic that Le Pen has her economic credentials examined and ridiculed when her establishment opponent represents the policies responsible for France's current economic performance. Equally ironic calling Macron an independent centrist as reliance on Socialist representation in the NA would be his natural constituency.

Hope people's lives improve.. Otherwise it is extremely easy for the far right or the far left to blame everything on the "other".

The Daily Mail (and their boneheaded readers) have been obsessed with his 24 year older wife (who was his former teacher) for weeks now.
