Foreigners will be banned from buying houses in New Zealand before the end of the year, the country’s incoming prime minister said today as she vowed to make tackling inequality and slash immigration her immediate priorities.

Just read this in an article in The Times . Quite a bold step . How do people on here who live in NZ feel about it?

I'm not a fan at all of the policy, nor the sentiment, but that's a very misleading sentence.

They are planning to ban foreign "speculators" i.e. investors living outside NZ without NZ residency or citizenship will not be able to purchase property. People immigrating to NZ are of course still able to purchase houses.

Either way I'm not a fan and believe the simple, logical solution to the housing crisis is to simply tax it properly. However, this is not the policy that Australians seem to think it is.

Apparently these are the sort of posters New Zealand libertarians hang up around Australian universities when they come here.
