Think Marsh is seen by his peers as probably the most talented player of his age (unless you include Clarke). With a settled side around him, the selectors could see it as the time to play him and let him have a crack at it with the other 6 members of the batting feeling very confident about their spot, that the environment now is right for them to get the most out of the most unfulfilled talent over the last ten years.
It's generally unfulfilled for a reason. Being on the piss and not having the desire to work hard are what comes to mind with him. Letting discipline and work ethic slide isn't good enough when your selecting for tests.

His selection makes no sense unless he plays at 3 before Dools. Offers nothing as reserve bat. 30 with the only form he offers is with his drinking arm. Maybe Boof needed someone to drink with.

Does that monkey in benchmark's avatar get older as time progresses? I swear it does.

Hughes would be wasted going to SA. Would of spent his time as target practise in the nets, which is a much better job for Marsh. Sir Alex at 6. They will go that way for the series unless someone does a ham sandwich.

Shockingly, in line with Vic and B00nchmark's thoughts, this is as good a time to pick Marsh as any.

Maybe but an away series might, perversely, put him under less pressure than starting in a home Ashes series. He doesn't deserve to be picked and the press would be all over that.
