Public or Private School?

The best way to learn geography is by taking kids to many outdoor trips and giving them hands on experience. It's very dull to learn about nature through text books.

Geography is not only about nature. Map reading is a very useful skill.

I went to a state school, but a Grammar school. Not many areas have them now.

If I had the cash and my kids weren't going to go to Grammar school I'd consider private, but as it is I ain't paying those fees X 3

Local catholic primary school.
Independent catholic secondary school in Year 7 & 8 before getting a scholarship to a more exclusive "private" Catholic school to finish my schooling.

My folks spent time in Sydney, said how in Sydney the "classes" were determined by where you lived, where in Melbourne it was more about what school you went to.

Private schools are set up to get you a better score when you finish school, and can help you with networking.

But in terms of achieving, I'd rather be a kid who has walked out of a public school with the same score as one from a private school; you've learnt more life skills and ability to be self motivated and specialised - as public schools/non-elitist have to cater for all options (readying people for work straight out of school, keeping kids in school as long as they can, trades) than the private/elite school that want to hang their hats on average ENTER scores and percentage of Year 12s who head to university.

As straw man alluded to earlier, the governments actually put a lot of money into non-government schools.

An article about that level of funding was in the paper today, interesting read about the consequences if we continue on our current pattern, and why there is a push from lots of parents to get their kids into the private system.

Election 2016: What kind of government better funds private schools than its own?
Yes I find this situation completely bizarre and incredibly unfair, so it is surprising there's little interest in changing it.

Was chilling with a girl last week and she asked me what the difference between biology, physics and chemistry is. (she's 24 I'm not a paedo guys).

I really didn't know what to say. I mean, she wasn't a dumb girl. Just totally and utterly failed by the education system. I went to a public school too, and it wasn't a particularly good one. But gee.

In the end I showed her what all three are kaching etc etc
You made her beans on toast? (Beans in the microwave, because physics)

It's a similar situation to mine, except the Grammar I went to was private when I attended - however mine and many others places were paid for by the local council due to the lack of Catholic Grammar places within the area (my primary school was adamant we continued in Catholic education, and wouldn't pass recommendation for me to attend the local state Grammar for that reason)

I was driving past one of the local schools last month (I'm now living under Salford council), and it had a big banner out the front inviting parents to an open day, boasting of its 60% GCSE A*-C pass rate.... My housemate says thats one of the best schools in the area. My school was disappointed when 1 kid out of 120 in my year failed to meet that standard. Made me realise just how good an education I've wasted.

In the UK so-called "public" schools are the private ones.

Anyway, having met plenty of people who attended that type of establishment, I would like nothing more than to have nothing to do with such places ever again.
We call them private schools up here because we know how to use the language properly.

The fact UK labels what are private schools as "public schools" sums up everything wrong with that place. That and the fact that it is the home of GIMP and sledger.

Call them private ffs.

Its up there in annoyingness as the US putting months before days when writing out dates.
No, England do this. Stop lumping us together ffs.
