The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Yeah Hooper was a solid player. Definitely not a no-rounder

Even Mitch Marsh probably a bit too good to be called a no-rounder, there are specialist bowlers with worse bowling averages

No that's a judgement on quality not role.
lol you're picking an "ATG all-rounder" team. Quality is heavily implied.

Yeah but I'm cheating to get a solid bat in there

Having a batting average of 36 was very much test class for the era Hooper played in. Add in 114 wickets and being a great slip fielder and Hooper was a very solid all round package as a cricketer.

I'd take that over a middle order batsman who averaged early 40s with the bat but didn't have quite as much going for him as Hooper.
Hence imagine the value of the 3 guys who did all three so much better. Sobers, Kallis, Hammond and to a lesser extent Bobby Simpson. Brilliant batsmen (Simpson as an opener specifically), very useful 5th bowlers and all four among the very best slip fielders ever.

Surely Akram is first choice for the ODI XI.

Wasim Akram is a bit of a push to call an ODI all-rounder too. If you let everyone averaging 16 or more with the bat in then you're probably opening the floodgates a bit

Thought he'd have averaged more than that with the bat. Still, I'd have him over the likes of Afridi without a second thought.

Yeah, Akram gave the impression of being quite capable with the bat but his averages in test and ODIs are both quite ordinary; in case of tests helped greatly by the 250+ he got against Bangladesh.

very true. It was Zimbabwe but same deal, wasn't the strongest opposition.

With the bat, Wasim Akram was nothing more than a useful hitter down the order, but that gives him enough head start over a lot of other ATG bowlers if one has to pick among them.

In tests though, Imran and Hadlee beat him with both bat and ball, so objectively they would be picked ahead of him.

When was Ricky Ponting ever at point?

EDIT: removed as I did not quite realize what you were going for there.. Still Ponting was more at slips no?

When was Ricky Ponting ever at point? Jonty miles better than the next best at that and the midwicket for spinners position.
Basically the entire first half of his career. There'd be a video or 2 on youtube of Ricky Ponting run outs where you could see it. He moved out of point and went into 2nd slip/short midwicket when he became captain.

I assume he didn't pick Jonty because it's still an ATG team and Jonty would not make anyone's ATG teams

Was at point in ODIs usually. Remember some handy stuff at silly point too. Great all around really. Smith and Hammond are 2 other gun slippers.

I always associate him with 2nd slip.. But maybe he was at point in ODIs, although again, I recall seeing him more at covers than at point really.
