A very random question but it was brought up at work today. Not sure why.

Defence as well, natural initiative in olden times when on the physical defence is to shield the torso, the biggest target. This has transferred to a modern 'mental' defensive, such as when being questioned, its so rooted in our ancestory to cross arms we still do so. Just like the businessman leaning back in his chair with his arms behind his head (a symbol of strength and power)
