You'd hope that people in most successful capitalist country would know that rich people would often invest in businesses (not to mention charity) that generate employment and rev the economy up. But how they have been conned into grudging them their wealth even if earned by honest means! By all means investigate any wrongdoings including anti competitive practices but we know where treating being wealthy as evil in itself leads us.

Besides, there was a study in The Economist that suggests that income inequality hasn't really gone up over the decades if you look at entire distribution not just the top 4 richest people in the world.

There are normal rich/successful people and then there is Bezos

Don't mind having a pop at him even if it isn't exactly justified in this case, whatever

New Venezealand?
Union of Stralyian Socialist Republics?

I'm sure we can tax ourselves into prosperity. Guaranteed to work.

Although an International Communist Committee would probably still run cricket better than the current ICC.
Perhaps we can austerity our way into well being, cut back on public services and leave it to the market? That way, when there's a real national or international emergency we'll all be better for social security, research and health budgets having been cut for over ten years.

Oh.

Smarter and less damaging just means "making sure my stock portfolio is profitable after this goes away". The sacrifice is thousands of old poor people, not him and his mates.
yep

im far from a communist, and quite happy to point out that dude was speaking out of pure self interest

OK so given there's no cricket and the coronavirus is what's occupying most minds at the moment, is it time to move this thread to head of the queue?

I mean, I'm sure it didn't seem a small sample for the 49 poor buggers, but is it a large enough sample to be statistically significant?

Small sample size though isn't it, a la Lillee in the Subcontinent?
Artificially small, that's likely the problem. You can come up with your own rules of thumb; the ones I've seen most commonly cited give a rough 1 death ~= 800-1000 cases ratio based on a ~1% CFR and a ~5 day case doubling time.

Even more concerning are these social media videos of people collapsing in the street from respiratory failure.

A few pro tips for quarantine.

1. Work out a few projects that you want to do during this time. Some gardening, an online course, household improvement or repairs, learning a language, starting a collection of your belly button lint, cooking meth - whatever it is, plan for that and buy the things you need as specialty shops are unlikely to be open.
2. Start a one month trial for a ********* service and set an alarm to cancel so you won’t have to pay.
3. Chocolate and beer
4. Maybe do some exercise? I don’t know, I haven’t, but maybe it’s a good idea.

You'll be fine!
Forgive me for not reading but I might not be taking tips from some **** who was gonna fly halfway around the world during a global pandemic.

I hadn’t seen those tbh. ****ing grim.

Just heard Morrison again closing down more and more places (even funerals) while at the same time encouraging schools to stay open.

Asked if that’s contradictory he said the media is panicking and shouldn’t talk that way. Even said he would encourage schools which have closed to reopen. Can tell you my sister in law who’s a teacher is ****ing pissed and petrified all at once.

Kinda in agreement with Bahnz about this anyway. Think at some point relatively soon the economy is gonna need to open up again.
