Belter expected for tour opener

The Cricket Web XI seam bowlers face a huge task come tomorrow, as they face off against the PCB Patrons XI batsmen, vying for a place in the team for the first Test. Reports indicate that the selectors will be going into the Test with two spinners - Neil Pickup and Tom Halsey - meaning that the four pace bowlers will compete for two specialist spots.

Test veterans David Kennett, Kyle Wright face off against first-class veteran Dave Watt and young speedster Greg Thomas. Each bowler boasts a distinctive style and they will all look to prove effective on what groundsman Sajid Masood says will be a batsman's paradise. "The pitch should hold up well throughout the match. Good bounce. Easy pace. The batsmen should prosper," said Masood. When asked if the pitch was prepared under PCB directives to blunt the CW XI preparations, Masood claimed he prepared the most suitable pitch for the occasion.

Whatever assistance there is for the seamers will expected come early in the match, making the toss essential to the tourists' plans.

In news of the batting attack, Liam Camps jr. is set to open alongside Thamba Mamesh in an attempt to displace Mike Wilson for a return to the Test set-up. Despite having shone with the ball in recent one-day internationals, Camps is unlikely to bowl much. He accepted the role saying, "Sorting the main bowlers out is more important right now. I understand the thought process."

The Cricket Web XI were beaten 2-0 the last time they toured Pakistan, and 2-1 in CWLand last season. The Pakistan selectors will be looking closely at the Patrons XI seam attack, with particular emphasis of Shahid Nazir, as they look to finalize the team for the first Test, given injuries to Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul.

Goff stars as Webheads warmup with draw
Cricket Web XI vs PCB Patrons XI

Several plays pushed their names into strong contention for the first Test, but it was Brendon Goff who spoke the loudest on flat pitch at Gaddafi Stadium. Batting with supreme confidence and a distinct aggression against the spinners, the CW XI captain warmed up for the main event with 169 off 194 balls, including 14 fours and 2 sixes. His was the biggest innings in a first innings score of 315-7, as the Cricket Web XI declared 57 runs short of their opponents' score.

The PCB Patrons XI had batted first after Asim Kamal won the toss, choosing to take advantage of the surface. Greg Thomas was sharp early on and bowled with excellent pace throughout the day. He was rewarded first with the wicket of Hameed, then Kamal and Misbah-ul-Haq. The pick of the bowlers, however, was Kyle Wright. He looks to break back into the Test team after a long absence and did his claims no harm with 3-46 from 23 overs, making him by far the most economical of the CW attack. Watt and Kennett were frustrated by the Patrons XI batsmen, especially Shahid Yousuf, who scored a classy 136. Kamal declared at 372-7 in the morning session of the second day.

In response both openers fell early to loose strokes and Chris Butler joined his captain at 13-2. The two would proceed to dominate the following session and added 230 for the third wicket, despite Butler contributing just 67. Dauth was next in and he slogged two big sixes in a pleasant 30, but his fun was ended with a simple slip catch by Hameed. Kearsley (4) and Wilson (16) failed to make a significant impact, and it was at the dismissal of the latter that Goff called the innings to a close.

The Cricket Web XI bowlers hardly had things any easier the second time around, and were made to toil in the sun again. Again Wright was the pick of the seamers, bar Wilson, and was unlucky to only take 1 wicket in his 8 overs. Half-centuries from Yasir Hameed and Bazid Khan set the game up nicely, and when Kamal declared for the second time in the game - 160 for 4 - it was to set a target of 218 runs from 38 overs.

The second failure of Camps was hardly as significant as that of Dauth, as Kearsley entered and applied pressure with an innings of 64 not out, looking largely untroubled by the home team bowlers. At the other end, Mamesh blazed away and cut, lofted and pulled his way into form. He ended unbeaten on 107 from 80 balls, and the CW XI finished the match in a very commendable position of 188-2.

[B}PCB Patrons XI 1st innings 372-7 (121 overs)[/B]

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Good showing guys. Thought before the match that we would've got carted given how the pitch was talked up for the batsman. Not dissappointed with the bowling effort - not over the moon, mind. Some good scores by the batsmen. Will be a tough series. Looking forward to it (if I'm picked).

Sami out of tour

Fast bowler Mohammad Sami has been ruled out of the series against the Cricket Web XI with a fractured toe. Sami was expected to play alongside Mohammad Asif in the first Test, in the absence of Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul. Now Pakistan are stressed for options and reports suggest that Naved-ul-Hasan and Shabbir Ahmed will feature in Karachi.

Shabbir and Rana included in 1st Test squad

Shabbir Ahmed and Naved-ul-Hasan seem set to support Mohammad Asif in the first Test against the Cricket Web XI, as they have been included in Pakistan's 13-man squad. In the absence of Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami and Umar Gul to injury, the Pakistan pace ranks are slim and they've allowed the possibility of playing two spinners in the game.

Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq have been included in the squad, but it is expected that only one will play. Afridi, given his explosive form in CWLand last season, is tipped to be the choice.

The first Test will begin on Monday 29th January, at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Pakistan 1st Test squad:
Inzamam-ul-Haq (c), Kamran Akmal (wk), Mohammad Yousuf, Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Farhat, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Asif, Danish Kaneria, Naved-ul-Hasan, Shabbir Ahmed, Abdul Razzaq.

Wright included in 1st Test squad
Fast bowler set for recall?

Kyle Wright is tipped to make his return to Test cricket in the first Test against Pakistan, starting tomorrow. Wright has been included in the Cricket Web XI 12-man squad for the match. One of Greg Thomas and David Kennett is tipped to play alongside Wright. Missing out is Dave Watt, who debuted strongly in South Africa, but fell away greatly as the series progressed.

Rob "Delacruz" Dauth also misses out, with Davd Kearsley retained from the team that played the last Test against South Africa.

CW XI 1st Test squad:
BJ Goff (c), NS Pickup (vc), H Moerk (wk), T Mamesh, AP Cloete, DA Kearsley, CR Butler, DM Kennett, GM Thomas, KS Wright, TC Halsey, MW Wilson.

Disappointed to be dropped, though it was inevitable in my current form. Good luck to Kears and the boys. Let's get a win, shall we? :p
