The western view is that it is not a good way of life. However, can it work with successful happy people under the same?

If you are in a position where you decide what other people should do, then it is kinda amazing.. The amount of money the people here earn who decide whether agricultural land can be converted into industrial is amazing. They live the good life.

No because recent forms of governments have all been designed to make thinks difficult for unfavorable people to get to power. None are good but democracy is the best type of government that we have got that allows smooth progress into uncharted territories for societies. If something better comes along because of tech or whatever, we should switch over but at the moment, this works best.

AWTA. However there might have been cases of people living well under communism. Have there been instances of this?

I think so. Have you seen North Korea? Looks like the happiest place on earth whenever I watch their tv streams.

It's never worked, it never will work and for the most part the closer you get to it the worse everything works.

Doesn't work. Will never work. The opposite side of the same coin as extreme market-based societies. Both are pure ideologies which sound great but can't overcome the basic premise of human existence, also known as Burge's First Law:

People are Pricks.

exactly, the people who tout those laissez-faire ideals don't realize how similar they are to pure communist doctrine...

Perfectly said in a nutshell.

One of the worst things about communism is that it pervades people into a delusion that destroys the working and community culture of people for generations. It destroys peoples' respect for the rule of law and all the important functions that most western societies have - and take for granted.

Communism is the most evil political ideology in existence because of its tempting nonsense re equality and the body count it leaves behind. People are attune to the threat of fascism but are often apathetic about communism. This is partly because of political and historical reasons as well as a poor education system that has to peddle some kind of statism. Most people I speak to barely know anything about the Gulags.
