Won’t comment much on this specific innings but zorax is right when he says that Dhoni’s innings was equal parts crucial and awful.

Dhoni’s batting throughout his career has been about premeditation. Not in the reverse switch hit sense of the word, but he doesn’t play deliveries on merit. He often decides before the ball is delivered whether he’s going to try to nudge it for a single, leave, bash or dead bat it. You can see it in his backlift and how he constantly tries to turn his wrists at the last second when he’s hunting for that single, despite the ball being there to drive.

He used to be really good at this, and did it brilliantly for years. Unfortunately it’s an incredibly hard thing to do, and his skills have since diminished, but he still seems to believe he is capable of that level of manipulation.

He isn’t and so what should be laced through covers is left alone, what is to be driven down the ground for a single is dead batted and what can be tucked away down the legside is swatted at. He’s playing EA cricket instead of reacting, and his skill level isn’t up to the task.

Dhoni is a classic example of "you either retire a hero or play long enough to become the villain". See also: Tendulkar, Botham.

As it should be when your team qualifies. This is the correct attitude. India's attitude of "Oh we should beat NZ easily" was their downfall. You should always respect that your opponent is doing everything they can to beat you. But you should never care who your opponent is.
Maybe playing Bangladesh in finals made them too complacent. They thought they could win this one by just showing up too.
Predictably lazy posts saying the team favored to win was complacent rather than saying they got outplayed on the day.

No team goes into a wc semifinal complacent you stupid ****s.

No all the talk was that India's run would be easier against New Zealand. Turned out that was not the case. India really let the game slide at points. Their fielding and bowling wasn't sharp toward the end of the New Zealand innings and they seemed to not have the foot down when they came out to field on the second day (Jadeja aside, who was phenomenal the whole game - real 3D player).

I have watched that Ian Smith compilation from ICC three times already. Such a joy to watch Ian jumping around. He takes you along with you and sweeps you off your feet with the joy he emits. Absolutely loved it

If you mean they weren’t as switched on on day 2 as day 1 because of the commanding position they were in then perhaps.

But they were definitely switched on. It’s a semi final ffs.

Jadeja deserved to be on the winning side. Gave it all and fielded with such intensity too. Epic. If he'd won it we'd be talking about the nerves of NZ batsmen who blocked full tosses from Bumrah and Bhuvi.

need more of this kind of passion from you

on another note it really is funny how hard people try to come up with other reasons why a team lost other than just accepting that they were outplayed. It's either "complacency" or "selected the wrong players", or the classic "umpiring/bad luck"

Pretty sure I could have got noise control called to my house when Guptill got Dhoni run out. HUGE..
Haha likewise! Along with going into a sudden prayer move when that catch went up off Jadeja.

What a night, absolutely buzzing today.

I do wonder how much the 2 day event played a part in this win. There may not have been as much movement early on if India got to bat late in the day. Either way, I agree it was a winning performance by New Zealand rather than a losing one by India. It is one of the great games of World Cups.
