The sorting wasn't dumb per se. Hogwarts dividing the sorted students the way they did was.

The reason Harry-Ron-Hermione were good together was because of them being, in some sense, Gryffindor-Hufflepuff-Ravenclaw. What they missed was Slytherin to help with strategy and vision.

Not Terrible
The sorting acts like it assigns people according to their personality traits. But it admits that it actually assigns people to a group based on the traits that they value, rather than those they possess.

In other words it’s a more honest version of Myers-Briggs.
Secret sorting hat questionnaire revealed:
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A) Interesting and clever
B) Cool and Brave
C) Rich and powerful
D) I don't understand the question

A- Ravenclaw B-Gryffindor C-Slytherin D-Hufflepuff

When you've named a house after a massive sociopath who unleashed a huge ****ing snake to kill the mixed bloods, what else do you expect from its members? Weird that they never cancelled that house altogether.
Dumbledore needed their votes to execute his Southern strategy.
