The new normal

Sounds like your problem is an arsehole of a boss.
Having slept on this, I think this is a horrid take and couldn't be more wrong, and has nothing to do with the five grand payrise he gave me today......

I'm liking this new normal.

I’ve just discovered that after 52 years visiting the same barber shop business through three owners and one change of premises it’s going to be necessary to book an appointment for a haircut when they reopen. I hope this infringement on liberty isn’t the “new normal” long term.

I ma pissed off that you guys can all go out if necessary. It's ****ing total lockdown here and I abused the **** out of our security guard because he got in my way while I drove to the front gate. Feel angry most of the time.

Even during our strictest lockdown I was still working, shopping and going for walks. The thought of not being allowed out at all is not a pleasant one.

I get no WiFi or data signal in my office toilets. So thats when I play stick cricket

Its actually a thing with one of my colleagues now. I'll Skype him and ask if he's free and he's like, give me 15 I'm off to play stick cricket
You sort of informally monitor when each other take a ****? That’s not a new normal which will work for me I’m afraid

The new normal for retirees playing golf is having to book on line and pay up front. Public courses are now inundated with people 'working from home'. Not that I blame them - it's all about time management.

We had a few days in the middle when things began opening up like local shops, tho we weren't allowed to leave the city. But cases spiked so they shut it down again.

I'm actually dreading going back to office 5-6 days a week because I find I now have so much more time in the day for myself.

I save 2 hours of travel each day, maybe 20 minutes each morning getting ready and a load of washing, drying and ironing each week.

I save on travel costs which come up to about $150 a month, expensive lunches and post work drinks in the CBD and don't need to wear uncomfortable office attire in stifling heat.

Get to spend time with the family instead of coming home tired and just wanting to keep to myself. Once things fully open up the lack of socialising will be easily addressed too, especially given I'll have more time for my own things.

The only downside seems to be productivity. I'm spending way too much time on CW and browsing the internet on work time because I have very little discipline unless there's a deadline coming.

I want a bloody vacation, the workload's been pretty heavy and it seems like there's no light at the end of the tunnel at all. :(

I mean I could take a few days off and sit at home doing **** all but it just seems like a pointless waste. I haven't had a day off since February, worked on a few public holidays + weekends and it's making me very grumpy on a Monday morning.

Absolutely. Yes, you do save commute time, avoid unnecessary meetings (not in my case) and so on with WFH, but going to office and getting some face-to-face interaction with colleagues is a big part of our social life for many people.

There are so many things like getting a quick review of an email that you can do or have done for you by a colleague and stuff that just takes so much longer now over IMs etc. And I find it more relaxing to be at office, coz it gives me a logical end point for the day, but with WFH, and given my job timings can spread anywhere between the timezones of China to US Eastern, it just feels like I am always working, even though I spend significant time on CW and other sites during the day. The fact that I cannot basically close the laptop for the day even by night 11 PM or so does bug me in this "new normal". I just hope someone invents a cure and a vaccine ASAP so that we can go back to the "old normal".

Yeah, this too. I've tried to set better boundaries over the last couple of weeks and shut things down by around 7:30-8:00 p.m. come what may.
