You use a liberal amount of butter and toast the slices on a flat frying pan. That's how people usually make butter toast over here.

It's definitely fried bread. But toast can be done under the grill, so buttering it first is still possible.

Just because you put slices of bread on a pan with some oil or butter doesn't mean that it's not toast.
