Totalitarianism gone mad AKA the China thread

It's just to silence dissent. I think it sets a precedent as well that they can override our local government, whom at best they see as incompetent, and at worse see as malicious. LegCo elections in September - if the pro Dem movement gets a majority of the seats, then no bill is going to pass without Beijing straight up overruling them
Silencing dissent is certainly a factor. But the vast majority of policies are based around stimulating economic growth. And I cant think how they would have calculated this to be economically beneficial.

Really dude? I wouldnt bother reply to this sort of comment from pretty much anyone else, but I respect the fact that you have a thought through and well developed political stance, despite the fact that I am diametrically opposed to it as a utilitarian.

China ia 100% not a fascist state. Depending on how rigorous you are with the definition, you could call China a totalitarian state. In the past i always used to follow Arednts definition. She is the seminal scholar on the issue for good reason. But Chinas authoritarian tendencies have made me reassess, and I dont care about how you define it either way. But you are better than hurling banalities like fascism around.
Haha if there are any posts you shouldn't bother replying to, my three-word drive bys should be near the top of the list.

But I didn't even really mean it in the super-derogatory way it probably came across. I think social democracy is more or less just fascism with extra steps after all. Your post came in reply to one about communism and capitalism -- economic systems, rather than systems of government per se -- and described China's in a way that Mussolini would've very much approved of.

Whether or not the state itself or its governance could be accurately described as a fascist, an ecomomic system whereby private firms exist and compete against other in the market, but the state owns a large percentage of all of them and acts as a firm fits in very well with the below, and could probably be better described as fascist than capitalist or socialist. This doesn't necessarily mean they're going to commit genocide or invade Poland and it's admittedly a bit cheeky because people (rightly IMO) have an automatic "fascism bad" trigger in their minds, but all the same.

Mussolini said:
Fascism should more properly be called corporatism, since it is the merger of state and corporate power.

National Security Law came into force today and there's so much i'm reading about it on twitter that is so ****

- "provoking hatred' against the government is now punishable for serious cases by life imprisonment
- no bail, you stay in jail until trial is finished
- law applies to non-permanent residents of HK who commit crimes under the law outside HK - i.e. applies to everyone around the world
- first person arrested was someone who was stopped and searched by the police and had a flag in his bag that says "Hong Kong Independence" on it
- police have been instructed to arrest anyone chanting a slogan supporting HK or Taiwan independence and anyone in possession of a flag or banner promoting HK or Taiwan independence
- suspects arrested will be tried in mainland China

Yeah that is genuinely one of the most dystopian things I've seen in a long time, at least outside of historical documents. Just a straight-up assertion of totalitarian legal authority on incredibly vague precepts.

It literally declares jurisdiction over the entire world. It is an extraordinarily authoritarian document.
